National Midwifery StandardsMidwives' Alliance of North America (MANA) has developed a list of core competencies for entry level midwives. The North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) has developed a process to verify practical skills and has developed an academic test. NARM certifies midwives who qualify with the title, Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). Most states that license midwives use the NARM academic test and practical skills verification. It is anticipated that with this national standardization, midwives who become NARM certified will be able to move more easily from one state to another. However, each state has its own laws regarding certification and licensing. It is up to the student to become familiar with the requirements in the state in which she wants to practice. The MCU curriculum is in compliance with the Midwives' Alliance of North America (MANA) core competencies and the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) practical skills. By completing the Associate of Science in Midwifery (A.S.M.) program through the MCU, students will be able to apply for NARM Certification and take the NARM written exam. The NARM skills exam will be waived for a MCU graduate. The following link provides the MANA Core Competencies for Midwifery Practice as of April 20, 1994, with MCU core courses that address each.
