Program Overview

The Midwives College of Utah offers an Associate of Science in Midwifery, a Bachelor of Science in Midwifery, a Certified Traditional Midwife certificate, a Masters of Science in Midwifery and a Certified Master Midwife certificate. MCU also offers a Continuing Education option and a State and Provincial Endorsement program.

As a student in a degree or certificate program, you will complete curriculum that is organized into "Levels". Levels indicate which courses should be completed within a year if you are attempting to complete the program within the designed time frame. Levels also indicate which courses should be completed as a "level" if you wish to take longer than the designed time frame to complete your program. See the designed and maximum time parameters below.

DESIGNED AND MAXIMUM TIME PERAMATERS FOR DEGREES AND CERTIFICATES
  • Associate of Science (ASM) 3 years-5 years
  • Bachelor of Science (BSM) 4 years-6 years
  • Certified Traditional Midwife (CTM) 1 year-2 years
  • Master of Science in Midwifery (MSM) 2 years-5 years

Degrees and certificates can be completed within their designed time frame as long as the following are met: You finish approximately 7-9 academic credits every 4 months You are working with a preceptor(s) that has a sufficient birth volume for you to obtain the clinical credit requirements within the necessary time frame.

Associate of Science, 74 Credits
The ASM is designed to be completed in 3 years, however, you have a total of 5 years to complete this degree. You will complete Levels I-III, see pgs 20-21. The ASM will prepare you for entry-level practice as a Direct-entry Midwife. Graduation requirements include successfully passing the NARM exam.

Certified Traditional Midwife, 99 Credits
The CTM is designed to be entered after the completion of the ASM degree. The CTM is for students who want the skills and education necessary to be a competent midwife, but who do not need or want the additional general education required for a Bachelor's degree. The CTM offers the same curriculum as the BSM, but does not require the 30.5 transfer credits. The CTM certificate is designed to be completed in four years with a total of six years allowed to complete the certificate.  Graduation requirements include successfully passing the NARM exam.

Bachelor of Science, 126 Credits
The BSM degree is designed to be completed in 4 years with a total of 6 years to complete the degree. In addition to completing Levels I-IV, the BSM degree requires that you complete an additional 30.5 semester credits. You may complete a few of these credits at MCU through elective credits. However, the majority of these credits must be transferred in from another post-secondary institution accredited by a DOE recognized accrediting agency. In addition, transfer credits must be a C grade or above to be accepted. Transfer credits may be from various disciplines.

It is highly recommended that these credits be completed at the time of your acceptance into the BSM program, but this is not required. Transfer credits must be completed within the maximum time period of 6 years.

Masters Program
If you have a Bachelor of Science from an institution accredited by an U.S. Department of Education recognized agency, you are eligible for the MCU graduate program. Depending on your qualifications, you may enter the graduate program in one of three tracts; the Science Tract, the Medical Tract or the CPM tract.

If accepted to the program you will work with an advisor to individually tailor your program to your needs and interests. With the exception of the CPM tract, your program will include coursework that will cover all of the MANA core competencies and NARM skills. Once designed, your program will be divided into Levels similar to the Undergraduate Programs. The number of required credits per program will vary from student to student.

In addition to course work, you must complete a Thesis and a Thesis defense. Students in the CPM tract must successfully pass a comprehensive written essay exam. The comprehensive exam will be designed by the Academic Dean and the Graduate Advisor. The test will be corrected by three faculty; the three scores will be averaged for a final test score.

You must have current CPR and Neonatal Resuscitation certifications before you can begin working with your preceptor.

From ASM to BSM to CTM
If you wish to continue on to the BSM or CTM after completing your ASM you must reapply to the higher level program. When entered directly from the ASM program, the BSM and CTM are designed to be completed in 1 year, however, you will have 2 years to complete the higher program.
