Erin Kaspar-FrettI first felt the call to be a midwife when I was 12 and my mother was pregnant with her third child. Although I was not at the birth, I was fascinated with the process of pregnancy and begged to be taken to the hospital when she was in labor.
Then in my mid-teens I learned about the midwives of old, those called the healers and witches. I wanted to be one but thought they were gone. As a young adult, I continued on my quest and majored in biology, not knowing how to become a midwife but still knowing that it was my calling. I didn’t want to become an MD. Then a friend called and said a training for doulas was coming through town. I immediately signed up and my birthing training truly took flight. Working for myself as well as for some local hospitals, I attended as many births as possible.
After 5 years of attending other’s births in the hospital and attending the Midwife’s Assistant training at the Farm with Ina May Gaskin, I gave birth to my son; at home, in the water, attended by midwives and in the presence of Greatness. Then, I found MCU and began my schooling when my son was 6 months old.
Since then I apprenticed with local midwives in Minnesota, I gave birth to my daughter (again at home and in the water), trained and volunteered at the feet of Robin Lim at Yayasan Bumi Sehat, the clinic in Bali, began my practice, developed systems and protocols for the volunteer program at Yayasan Bumi Sehat as part of my thesis project, graduated the Master’s program at MCU, found my life partner, moved to the country in
