Courtney Everson



Courtney Everson, BA, MA Courtney Everson joined the Midwives College of Utah as a faculty member in January 2010. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Western Washington University in 2004 with a major in Cultural Anthropology and a minor in English. In 2008, Courtney received her Master’s degree from Oregon State University (OSU) in Applied Biocultural Medical Anthropology with a minor in Public Health. She is currently pursuing her PhD from Oregon State University in Applied Biocultural Medical Anthropology, specializing in maternal-child health with an integrated minor in Public Health and Women’s Studies. Her dissertation research examines the measurable maternal-infant health outcomes and lived experiences of doula-supported teenage mothers. Courtney teaches undergraduate anthropology courses at OSU, is an avid guest lecturer, and serves as the graduate coordinator of the Reproductive Health Lab, Department of Anthropology, OSU. Courtney is also an apprentice midwife in a local homebirth practice and a practicing DONA-trained birth doula. Courtney holds current maternal cardiopulmonary resuscitation and neonatal resuscitation certifications, and regularly participates in continuing education courses and professional conferences as part of her schooling and clinical training in midwifery care. She is a co-coordinator of Heart of the Valley Birth Network, the Administrative Assistant to the Director of Research for the Midwives Alliance of North America-Division of Research (MANA-DOR), and a data reviewer for the MANA-DOR. She is actively involved in scholarly research, legislative work, and outreach efforts that support and advance the profession and art of midwifery. In combining research with care, Courtney believes in using cross-cultural perspectives and applied efforts to ensure equity and best practices in maternity options. She honors each woman's birth experience as unique and transformative, working with mothers and their families to create empowering, safe and healthy pregnancy, birth and postpartum processes. Courtney lives in Corvallis, OR with her partner Dale and their family tortoise.
