Save lives one birth at a time

The Midwives College of Utah (MCU) is proud to be a leader in accredited midwifery education.  One of the most meaningful components of our program is the Briana Blackwelder Equal Access Scholarship.  Funded by generous donors, MCU must raise $50,000 this year to support the education of midwives who will practice within their own underserved communities.

The truth is, the United States is confronting a very harsh reality:More Americans are dying of childbearing complications than any other developed country in the world. According to the CDC Foundation, 60% of these deaths are preventable
Even more abysmal is the fact that African Americans, Native Americans and Native Alaskans die of pregnancy-related causes at a rate about three times higher than those of white people.  And the death rates for black infants are twice that of infants born to non-Hispanic, white mothers, according to CDC data.  The health care costs of these deaths range in the billions of dollars and the emotional toll on families and communities is immeasurable.

Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) have been called upon to be part of the solution and save lives, one birth at a time.  Like me, I imagine that you believe in the right of childbearing families to receive care from a competent, culturally sensitive midwife.  MCU’s educational pathway is designed to cultivate intellectual curiosity, spark passion, and expand future professional options.   In doing so, each of our graduate CPMs becomes part of resolving the current care crisis for childbearing families in the United States.

MCU is inviting you to partner with us in our commitment. The Briana Blackwelder Equal Access Scholarship fund provides full tuition for students whose practices will increase the racial and ethnic representation within the midwifery workforce.  When you donate to this scholarship, you directly pay tuition for a student who might otherwise be unable to complete their midwifery education.

As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, Midwives College is supported by monetary gifts from people such as yourself who are passionate about supporting midwives of excellence within every community.  I invite you to use this link to make your donation.   Or visit our website to learn more at:

Thank you again for your support.  Together we can save lives, one birth at a time.

"Receiving the Briana Blackwelder scholarship has made it possible for me to have access to an outstanding program and move closer to my dream of serving people in my community while working towards fighting inequity in maternal healthcare.  Having received this scholarship has made all the difference on my journey."
