MCU Now Accepting Applications for Summer Term

SALT LAKE CITY — The Midwives College of Utah (MCU) is proud to announce that the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) has granted accreditation to the college. Accreditation acknowledges MCU’s commitment to training midwives of technical expertise, professional excellence, and personal greatness.

MSCHE is an institutional accreditor recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Accreditation with MSCHE supports MCU’s ongoing institutional excellence through continuous improvement and innovation.

Over the past few months, MCU participated in MSCHE’s expedited accreditation pathway. MSCHE representatives met with MCU leadership during a site visit to the college’s Salt Lake City office in September 2026.

“MSCHE accreditation reflects MCU’s continued dedication to midwifing midwives through their educational journey and beyond,” said Megan Koontz, President of the Midwives College of Utah. “We are extremely proud of our faculty, staff, and students, all of whom live out MCU’s vision of improving outcomes and eliminating inequities for pregnant people and their babies during the childbearing year.”

With its MSCHE accreditation, MCU now holds accreditation from two agencies. MCU retains its accreditation from the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council (MEAC), which is necessary for midwifery licensure in some states. However, following MEAC’s withdrawal of recognition from the U.S. Department of Education, MCU began researching and identifying other accrediting agencies that would align with our institution’s mission and values. After careful consideration, MSCHE proved to be the best fit.

During its review, MSCHE representatives identified several strengths of MCU, including:

  • Rigorous curriculum that is mapped not only to MEAC standards but also to the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) standards.
  • Engaged students who are excited about the work they are doing now and what they will accomplish in the future.

Accreditation from both MSCHE and MEAC are ongoing processes, and MCU will continue to work with these organizations to ensure our school is a leader in midwifery education.
